Polo - Some General Stuff

Hello my Canoe Polo Friends!

Just a quick e-mail with some food for thought.

1)    I hope everyone is enjoying the training sessions on Tuesdays.  I apologise again to people who didn't get long on the water last night.  I will do my best to sort this out next week.

The situation would really improve if people can make a real effort to arrive on time.  Any help with getting out the kit would really be appreciated, and it means we can get on the water sooner, and play more polo!  We have the pool from 7:15, so let's use all the time we have availiable.

If anyone has any suggestions for improvements to the Tuesday sessions, don't hesitate to contact me (coach@polo.warwickcanoe.co.uk).

2)    Can everyone please make sure they wear a t-shirt or rash vest to training in the weeks to come - it's in the rules that you have to have something covering your arms.  Most people do, but I saw a few bare-naked shoulders last night, and we could do with getting them covered!

3)    I'm afraid this one is a bit of a moan - sorry.  Can I make people aware that jewelery of any kind should not be worn when playing polo.  This includes watches, bracelets, ear-rings (except studs) and rings.

Unfortunately, any type of band worn on the wrist could also be unsafe.  This includes friendship bracelets and charity wristbands.   Be aware that if you wear this kind of wristband and somebody, for example, traps a finger in it, YOU will be held responsible.  You have been warned!

4)  Some of you will have noticed that the bumpers on many of the boats are in a sorry state of repair.  I am going to do a semi-temporary fix on all of them at about 6 o'clock next Tuesday.  If anyone wants to lend a hand, I'll be on the balcony in the Sports Centre, and would be very grateful of the help.

In the words of the great Mrs Doyle, "Ahh, go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on!".  You know you want to!

Phew!  E-mail over!  See you all on Tuesday.

Gear Shopping

Last one from me - sorry people!

We are running a gear shopping trip to Go Outdoors in Coventry this Thursday. Sorry it's a bit short notice but we realised we'd run out of days!

Go Outdoors stocks all kinds of Camping and Outdoor kit, plus Matt from Canoe Kayak Trader stocks them with water sports kit. Matt will be there with extra kit on thursday to help us out.

As a member of the club they'll also be a discount (what is it prob depends on what gear you want).

Then after ward we're going next door (ish) to the FarmHouse Pub for a pint and some food if anyone wants.

We'll be leaving from 'the bar' at 5.45 as Go shuts at 8pm, se meet from 5.30 onwards. We'll try to get people there in cars (bring a pound for your driver - cheaper than the bus and everyone ends up happy) but if we run out of cars we'll bus it.

See you at 5.30 Thurs in the bar.

Union Email System is cocked up again - to read emails from canoe go to www.warwicksport.warwick.ac.uk, log in and choose Message Centre and then Mailbox, where you'll find all the emails clubs have tried to send you this week since it decided it would be fun to cause havoc once again!

Croyde

Morning All.

I really hate to say this but we will NOT be going to Croyde Surfing this weekend. Simply because however much i begged, pleaded and otherwise sold my soul i can't get us 2 drivers.

This trip has hence been postponed to next term, along with a North Wales Trip, a South Wales Trip and a Dart trip.

However i can now offer you the chance to complete you canoe Saftey Test in the comfort of leamington itself Saturaday week 9 (read my next email) and a chance for a bit of gear shopping in 'Go Outdoors' on Thursday (the email after that!)

I know it's no trade off, and i am genuinely sorry.

'Canoe Saftey Test'

Hullo.

Thanks to Jenna we are running a 'Canoe Saftey Test' Course and assesssment a week on Saturday in the Leam.

The course covers all aspects of rescues on flat water (which the theory of can then be applied on moving water) and will take the majority of the day. Because of this the first instalment will take place during canoeing IN THE POOL ON MONDAY.

It is a BCU course and hence will cost £20, which is primerially to cover BCU costs, and then just instructors travel expenses. It is a pre requisit to all BCU coaching qualifications.

To complete the CST you need to be 2* (or at least 2*standard) which most of you are, but if you are concerned email me. You are also going to need as much dry/warm kit as you can find as you will definietly be getting very wet!

There are just 10 places, sign is online like a normal trip. Then monday 21st in the pool and Sat 26th in the Leam.

Marvellous - more people to rescue me!

Due to a minor organisational glitch, we are now starting our annual pyromaniac night since we have missed both bonfore night and divali, whoops. We are starting at the bar at 7pm (bit early but the display has to end before 10pm or one of us gets arrested so far we are nominating Rich, hehe) We then leave campus at 7:30 to reach Rich and Chris's house at 8. For those who want to go directly they live in earlsdon, 34 broomfield rd (cv5 6jx for those that want to multi map it!!!!) Thank you notes (and presents) can also be directed to this address. This spectacular display of fire (including rockets and bonfire) unfortunately does not come for free as we have to buy then. Depending on numbers it should be £5 max. Bring your own marshmellows and beer, sparklers are provided. After display you will be faced with many choices: Do i go home and defrost? Venture out into the nightlife of cov to the Colliseum? Or any other al! ternative suggested on the night? For those who have not been to the colli, its cheap drinks in general but uber cheap before 11:30. Hopefully see you all there, bring whoever not just canoe lot. Monkey Boy & Special

As a reminder to the email that went around there will be coaching on thursday from 3.15 to 3.45, its open to both clubs and a post/email will go out on tuesdays explaining the skills that will be covered, if you fancy coming to learn that skill come, if you can already do it, then dont come.  The skills will range from things like low brace supports strokes to cartwheeling over the rest of this term and all of next so you all need to keep you eyes on the emails and website, thanks.

Next Tuesday, Birmingham will be coming to training to play a few friendlies.  This will make things a bit busier than usual but we'll spend as much time as possible playing games so everyone should get a game or two.

See you there,
Jon

TYNE TOUR

Posted 18y 5mth ago by Some Old Git
Posted by: Angie

Hey guys n girls

Time for another legendary trip. One of the best of the year this one.... THE TYNE TOUR!

Okay competition is rumoured to be strong for places this time. Due to the fact it's up north and hence a bit of a drive - specially if you go via watford gap (sorry couldn't resist) we are limiting places to 18people.

If you are in this 18 you will be transported on friday 4th up to near newcastle and join the carnage of the BCU's Tyne Tour, complete with 2 days grade 2/3+ paddling and the wonders of Saturday nights entertainment, before collapsing home late Sun Evening.

Cost is yet to be decided but will hopefully stay around the £20 mark as the club is heavily subsidising the cost of tickets (usually £17.50 on their own)

Due to the nature of the event some basic skill is going to be required, not much but some river experience ideally. For this reason if you have NEVER PADDLED ON MOVING WATER and want to come can you pls talk to chris (aka mister scarf boy) on coach@warwickcanoe.co.uk before signing up to make sure you're ok. Marrrrvellous. Those who came on the freshers trip, or have been with us to the leam will be fine.

Right - go sign up - online at www.warwickcanoe.co.uk, more trip info will follow next week.

See you on Monday
