RAGE. IS. BACK.

Our friendly (├░┼©╦£ÔǪ) neighbourhood fantasy tournament is back again for 2019!

For the uninitiated, Rage is a tournament within the club where teams compete against each other for ultimate glory! It works similarly to fantasy football, with people and teams gaining points for more than just goals...(More details on this to follow)

Signups are open now, and will close on Monday night. Games will be in Tuesday’s sessions and are planned to start in Week 5.

*** ELECTIONS AND PRES MANIFESTOS ***

Posted by: Hannah

Next Thursday (May 2nd), the Canoe and Canoe Polo clubs shall be hosting their annual elections. The most democratic event of the year shall commence at 19:30 in upstairs Kelsey's. There will be the opportunity to get pizza from the wonderful Papa Johns, before formal proceedings begin at 21:30.

Formal attire is ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED. Those wearing jeans shall be evacuated from the premises.

If you are running for an executive role, don’t forget to prepare a song (or poem) and a joke, both of which must be performed on the night.

Each club has received multiple presidential nominees, so buckle-down folks and have a read of the manifestos below:

****************************************************************************************************

CANOE

Mr Christopher Thompson

I thought I would never found a sport that I am passionate about (or good at, to some degree; why kayak when you can swim!) until I found kayaking. Upon coming to Uni and discovering such a fantastic club of like-minded enthusiasts. Over the last year helping out the freshers and seeing them progress has given me a new reason to love what I do.

I want to continue the fantastic work of this year’s exec in keeping a fresh rotation of new leaders in order to maintain our successful club trips. Additionally, over the next year I would like to focus more on coaching the old and the new with a renewed effort on improving paddle skills, bracing and edging so that everyone can shred gnar with style; instead of telling them to “Paddle like f**k”, down rapids . With the potential introduction of the CDO it will enable us to engage more with fundraising as a club, with the aim to add more events throughout the year. Finally I would like to have an additional Term 2 trip to CIWW as I believe this would be most beneficial in preparing beginners for Scotland and for peer-paddling trips.

Mr Sebastian Lamb-Camerena

Kayaking at university has introduced me not only to a new sport but also to a fantastic group of people who band together through thick and thin - I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of the club and how everyone works together to solve problems, whether it’s in the heat of the moment rescuing people, boats, and kit out of a river, or anticipating faffy rapids and changing our plan to make sure everyone stays warm and happy running everything.

I’ve made many friends through the club and been given the opportunity to develop myself personally through river trips, pool sessions and training courses. These have let me grow in confidence and develop my leadership skills, which is why I want to ensure these opportunities stay available through the next year, as these are important chances for people to develop their skills to be able to pursue kayaking beyond their university experience.

This year the paddleathon was a huge success: not only did we raise money for a great charity, it’s also contributed to the open and inclusive atmosphere which I love about the club: it allows everyone to feel comfortable with who they are, and presents an inviting environment for new members to try the sport. I want to highlight these qualities of the club at the sports fair and tasters so we can get more people involved. This includes keeping the strong focus we had early in the year with practicing specific skills with freshers, and hopefully introducing some more structured freestyle sessions later in the year.

I’ll be your friendly neighbourhood pres, keeping the good momentum the club has going and enabling personal development.

Mr Liam Fleet

For too long this club has been plagued by presidents who keep offering the same vague hopes of 'good' change. It is all too clear that these student presidents do not have the true leadership qualities that the club demands.

Instead, I hope to introduce comprehensive reform to truly take this club forward.

I will first work to remove waste in the exec with three simple steps:

  • Firstly, Canoe polo will be run by Canoe.
  • Secondly, kit sec will be abolished to encourage more use of personal kit
  • Thirdly, coach sec will be replaced with a large sign saying "do better"

Of course, I also plan to introduce measures that will directly benefit club members, these include:

  • Duck attendance to be made mandatory with boat and game priority being determined by regular pub attendance
  • Diversion of all club money towards the purchase and maintenance of a kayak-carrying 17-seater
  • The purchase of 3 door stops to be left by doors leading into the new sports centre

Furthermore, I feel that the quality of trips can be greatly improved with simple and easy adjustments, such as:

  • Driver eligibility to be determined on a sports centre - gatehouse - garage time trial
  • River groups to be exclusively determined by personality tests to improve cooperation
  • All leaders' meetings and all use of river signals banned to improve communication

I have always been a firm believer that stability is key component of kayaking success and that is why I will be encouraging you to vote not just for me, but for all members of the shadow cabinet on the 2nd May. A united exec is the only way to make these ideas a reality.

The shadow cabinet: strong and stable leadership in the club interest

The Right Honourable PEBBLE

Vote pebble for canoe pres. The future of the club under the presidency of any other candidate can be simply summed up by THIS VIDEO.

****************************************************************************************************

CANOE POLO

Mr Joe Petersen

Since joining the university canoe clubs I have met some amazing people and made some great friends; and, like with most things in life, I doubt I would have persisted in learning a completely different skillset to what I was comfortable with without having all of you great people learning (and swimming) with me.

With that in mind, as president I will aim to increase participation at pool sessions, post pool session pub trips, and most importantly socials! (At this point I would like to note that I have attended more of the above in my first two years than pebble has since the founding of these great clubs).

As president I would like to introduce one dedicated skills session a week to help people develop key skills under our newly trained coach (go Lara!) so that people can work on their polo outside of the pressures of game situations.

Please vote for me! I'd hate to lose to a (small) rock!

The Left Honourable Pebble

If you vote me President of our Great Club I would do what no others would do - Make Canoe Polo Great Again!

After 52% of the vote supporting it, we would secede from the Sports Union* and make our own Sports Hub! With blackjack! And hookers!

FEATURING:

  • 4 50 metre pools, only for canoe polo! None of those pesky plastic things…
  • Working goals for a bargain deal of only £5999.99!
  • Free Parking for All!
  • And, most importantly, we will relocate to Llangollen to ensure that all new boats are available asap

* Within two years**

**Assuming we can get the Sports Union to agree to a deal***

***And assuming the exec will also agree to the deal****

****But obviously if they can’t agree we can secede with no deal*****

*****Assuming the exec agree to this******

******And if all of this takes too long we can just extend the time period*******

*******Hmm

Actually, you know what...forget our own Sports Hub...and the blackjack…
